The M240B was adopted by the U.S. Military Armed Forces following a worldwide competition in search of a reliable 7.62mm NATO machine gun. The Coaxial version of the famous Belgian MAG 58, produced by FN Hertsal, won this competition. The M240 is now being produced by F.N. Manufacturing, Inc. The reliability of this firearm, over 50,000 Mean Rounds Between Failure (MRBF), makes it the most reliable machine gun in the world.
